Russian Railways and Österreichische Bundesbahnen (Austrian Federal Railways) begin new form of cooperation

The first meeting of the High-Level Council of Russian Railways and Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB – Austrian Federal Railways) took place in Vienna, the capital of Austria, on 6 July 2018.

The co-chairs were Oleg Belozerov, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, and Andreas Matthä, Managing Director of the ÖBB Holding AG.

Senior managers of Russian Railways and ÖBB, as well as heads of enterprises belonging to the RZD and ÖBB holding companies, took part in the work of the council.

Opening the meeting, Oleg Belozerov noted the effectiveness of the Company’s cooperation with ÖBB.

“The current time dictates the need for rapid progress in the fields of technology and digitalisation etc. It is gratifying that RZD and ÖBB enjoy bilateral agreements in almost all areas. We highly appreciate the cooperation with our Austrian colleagues,” said the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways.

One of the topics on the agenda was the construction of a broad gauge 1520 mm railway line between Košice, Bratislava and Vienna. The parties reviewed the current status of the project and strategic objectives.

Another issue addressed at the board meeting was cooperation in the field of freight transport and logistics. The volume of international freight transport between Russia and Austria in 2017 increased three-fold compared to the level of 2016, while the volume of container transportation increased by 28%. The positive trends continued during the first half of this year.

The parties noted the importance of providing transport flows along the railway routes between China – Europe – China.

At the moment, rail transit traffic between China and Europe is showing a significant increase, including by providing customers with a competitive and flexible transport and logistics service.

Russian Railways and ÖBB also agreed to work on cooperation issues in the field of digitalisation, including the possibilities of electronic data interchange and the creation of joint trading platforms etc.

The High-Level Council of Russian Railways and Österreichische Bundesbahnen was set up in order to coordinate the cooperation of the two companies in accordance with the February 2018 supplement to the cooperation agreement between Russian Railways and ÖBB which was signed on 19 May 2011.

The High-Level Council’s next meeting will be held in Moscow in 2019.
