One millionth user signs up to unified Wi-Fi station network since beginning of 2018

On 20 June 2018, the number of Internet users who had signed up to the unified Wi-Fi network reached one million.

The network has linked 136 railway stations owned by Russian Railways since the beginning of 2018.

The one millionth user was recorded at Leningrad railway station in Moscow, which remains the most popular in terms of Internet activity, with more than 55,000 users already registered at the station’s free Wi-Fi network in 2018.

Leningrad railway station is followed by two more of the capital’s stations, Yaroslavsky and Kursk.

Visitors and passengers at the stations have downloaded about 500 TB of traffic, which is the equivalent of more than 100 million songs, 13 million audiobook chapters or 120,000 films in HD format.

The most active use of the Wi-Fi network is at Yaroslavl station, where more than 16 TB of traffic have been downloaded in 2018.

Just a little behind Moscow’s users in terms of their use of Wi-Fi are passengers in Ufa, Saratov, Krasnoyarsk, Chita and Krasnodar.

To connect to the wireless Internet at the train station, passengers need to find the network name in the settings of their mobile device and undergo a simple authorisation procedure by entering their phone number in the corresponding field.

By the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ it was also possible to undergo verification by simply entering their ticket number at the railway stations in the cities host the games.

This will help international fans above all, especially if they do not have a SIM-card from a Russian mobile operator.

Authorisation using the ticket number is possible four hours before train departure and for four hours after arriving at the station.

JSCo Russian Railways, together with the company TransTeleCom, has been implementing a project to provide free Wi-Fi at its railway stations since 2015.

Today, the wireless Internet service is available at 136 stations, stations and stops throughout the country.
