Russian Railways takes part in International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD)
The international railway community, together with the Commission of the European Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, declared International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) on 7 June 2018 in order to prevent accidents at railway crossings.
OJSC Russian Railways has taken part in the ILCAD.
The Company carries out a lot of explanatory and preventive work aimed at reducing the number of accidents at railway crossings.
Measures to prevent accidents at railway crossings are implemented across the entire rail network. Railway staff visit crossings with handouts, talk to students at driving schools and give lectures at car enterprises.
Together with representatives of regional traffic police departments and public organisations, they also hold preventive talks with public transport drivers.
In cooperation with traffic police units, they have installed information boards with materials for improving traffic safety at the approaches to railway crossings and in crowded places, organised master classes and flash mobs and encouraged drivers to comply with the rules of the road at level crossings.
Russian Railways urges drivers to be vigilant when negotiating level crossings. A train or a locomotive cannot be stopped instantaneously – stopping distances range from tens to hundreds of metres.
In the first five months of 2018, the number of casualties from collisions at level crossings fell to 62, a decrease of 20% compared to the figure of the previous year, when there were 77.
At the same time, the number of deaths as a result of collisions increased by 11%, from 19 to 21.
