Passenger transportation by day express up by 25% in first quarter of 2018
During the period from January to March 2018, about 3.2 million passengers travelled on day express trains operated by the Federal Passenger Company, a subsidiary of Russian Railways.
This figure is 26.4% more than during the same period last year. In March, more than 1.1 million people travelled by day trains, an increase of 30.7% compared to March 2017.
Daytime trains accounted for 16.4% of the total of long-distance Federal Passenger Company trains in the first quarter of 2018 and for 16.8% in March.
Day express trains are accelerated trains that run during the day and consist mainly of carriages with seating accommodation: Lastochka electric trains, train formations consisting of new single-decker and double-decker carriages and Strizh high-speed trains.
The Federal Passenger Company is constantly expanding the geography and route network of the daily trains, which now include services between cities such as Moscow - Yaroslavl, Moscow - Belgorod, Moscow - Smolensk, Moscow - Kursk, Moscow - Bryansk, Moscow - Saransk, Krasnodar - Adler, Ufa - Samara - Saratov and others.
The current train timetable for 2017/2018 includes 55 pairs of daytime trains running on 28 domestic routes, including 29 pairs of high-speed day trains.
On the eve of the summer tourist season, a new daily route for passengers was opened when day train No. 818/817 Lastochka Krasnodar - Kislovodsk came into service on 1 April 2018.
