"We are ready to provide environmentally friendly transportation of solid waste," says CEO of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov

OJSC Russian Railways is ready to become one of the links in the chain of waste transportation and ensure its environmentally-friendly transportation.

This was stated by Oleg Belozerov, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, who was speaking at the session "The Environmental Image of the Russia’s Future: Prospects and Goals" at the Russian Investment Forum in Sochi on 15 February 2017.

According to the head of Russian Railways, the railways are the most suitable mode of transport to carry out this function since significant volumes of traffic are involved. In addition, such rail transportation is convenient for urban agglomerations, since they reduce the traffic on main roads and are as environmentally friendly as possible.

Oleg Belozerov cited estimates by the International Energy Agency and the International Union of Railways, according to which Russian Railways is the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly railway company in the world. The Company transports more than 86% of its freight and 85% of its passengers using environmentally-friendly electric traction.

The head of Russian Railways said that the Company was currently working on a technology for transporting solid waste over long distances in intermodal containers. In his opinion, in order to realise this option, concerted joint actions on the part of all the participants along the chain, including the regions, are needed.
