Russian Railways organises test piggyback shipment from Kaliningrad to Moscow

Kaliningrad on 10 February 2018.

At the Kaliningrad-Sortirovochny station, a trailer with a notional cargo was installed and attached to the platform, which was then dispatched to Kuntsevo-2 (Moscow) station as part of a freight train.

On 13 February 2018, the piggyback platform arrived at the destination station. The travel time, taking into account the passage through border checkpoints, was 76 hours, twice as fast than road transport. The cost of a railway piggyback is now 30% less than transportation by road.

The aim of the project was to organise piggyback shipments on an ongoing basis, which will allow some freight to be switched from road to rail.

The piggyback platform for the new transport project was designed and manufactured in Russia and is certified for operation on the railways.

During the test run, various issues regarding the technical support for the freight on piggyback platforms and customs clearance were resolved.

Roads with the heaviest traffic obviously have the greatest potential for the organisation of piggyback shipments. The higher speed of passage through border crossings and the delivery of goods by rail make it possible to reduce logistics costs significantly.

In addition, transportation by rail is more environmentally friendly. Emissions from one ton-km of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere from heavy vehicles are almost four times higher than from the railways.
