Transportation of containers on network of Russian Railways increased by 11% in January 2018

In January 2018, 317,500 Twenty-Foot Equivalent units (TEUs) of containers were transported on the network belonging to Russian Railways, 11.3% more than in January 2017.

Domestic container shipments were up to 134,500 TEUs, an increase of 5.9% compared to January 2017, while transit shipments jumped to 34,300 TEUs, a rise of 32.1%, export shipments rose to 85,500 TEUs, up 11.2%, and import shipments amounted to 63,200 TEUs, an increase of 14%.

Shipments of loaded containers on all types of routes increased by 12% in January 2018 compared to January 2017 and amounted to 200,800 TEUs, including the following freight categories. Figures in brackets show the change compared to January 2017.

  • chemicals and soda – 36,000 TEUs (+6.8%);
  • paper – 24,700 (+8.1%);
  • timber – 22,800 (+28.1%);
  • industrial goods – 20,800 (+13.9%);
  • fabricated metal products – 17,000 (+21.1%);
  • cars – 14,700 (+13.9%);
  • machines, machine tools, engines – 12,900 (+31.3%);
  • non-ferrous metals – 8,800 (+3.7%);
  • ferrous metals – 8,400 (+12.5%);
  • construction materials – 4,000 (no change from January 2017);
  • miscellaneous items and assemblies – 5,400 (+8.8%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 5,500 (+4.9%).

In January 2018, 2.9 million tons of freight were transported by containers of OJSC Russian Railways, 9.9% more than in January 2017.
