Head of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov talks about introducing digital technologies on the railways
Oleg Belozerov, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Open Joint Stock Company Russian Railways, has spoken about the main areas in which digital technologies are being introduced on the railways.
Belozerov was addressing the session “Business and the State: Digital Partnership Models in the Digital Age” at the Gaidar Forum, which was held in Moscow on 17 January 2018.
“Digitalisation for our customers is, above of all, a question of convenience. Lately, a large number of digital services has been introduced to passenger and freight rail transportation. Now, you can order not only tickets, but also food electronically. A retrieval service for lost objects is currently undergoing tests,” said Oleg Belozerov.
According to Belozerov, the next trend in the development of digital technologies in transport will be the creation of end-to-end transportation services by all modes of transport and organised on the basis of unified digital technological platforms.
One of the first steps Russian Railways has taken in this direction was the launch in March 2017 of an electronic exchange, the trading platform “Freight Transportation.”
The possibility of connecting other modes of transport to the process of a unified transportation system is currently being investigated.
These same technologies are being developed for passengers, so that all services can be built on one platform capable of handing taxis, railways and hotels.
According to the CEO of Russian Railways, the introduction of digital technologies will also have a positive impact on the internal efficiency of the Company. In particular, work is currently under way to digitise technological processes.
“We have already digitised some of our technologies and we are already benefitting a good economic return. Over the next four years, practically the entire railway system will be converted to digital technology,” said Oleg Belozerov.
