Transportation of passenger vehicles on long-distance car carriers increased by almost 11% in 2017
More than 5,200 vehicles consisting of cars and motorcycles were transported in 2017 on specialised carcarriers on long-distance trains operated by the Federal Passenger Company, a subsidiary of RussianRailways.
This figure of 5,200 is 10.7% more than in 2016. In December 2017, 457 vehicles were transported, anincrease of 25.5% compared to December 2016.
The transportation of cars and motorcycles is one of the most popular additional services provided bythe Federal Passenger Company. Passengers who want to use their car on a trip can have it transportedit on a specialised long-distance car carrier. The most popular routes in 2017 were Moscow – St.Petersburg, St. Petersburg – Adler, Moscow – Adler and Moscow – Helsinki.
The car carrier service has been operating since 2012. In total, more than 16,200 bookings for thetransportation of cars and motorcycles have been made since the launch of the service.
Car carriers are included in regular trains on eight routes: Moscow – Kazan, Moscow – Adler, St.Petersburg – Adler, Moscow – Saint Petersburg, Moscow – Petrozavodsk, Moscow – Rostov-on- Don,Rostov-on- Don – Adler and Moscow – Helsinki.
A car carrier is included in the train in accordance with the number of preliminary requests made.
Each car carrier can transport 3 to 5 cars at the same time, depending on their size, or 8 motorcycles.
The carrier’s interior is equipped with special attachments for fastening cars, as well as fire and burglaralarm systems. At present, the Federal Passenger Company has a fleet of 13 car carriers.
