Transportation of long-distance passengers during New Year holidays increased by 10%

Trains of the Federal Passenger Company, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, carried about 4.2 millionpassengers between 29 December 2017 and 9 January 2018, 10% more than during the2016/2017New Year holidays.

The Federal Passenger Company laid on 643 additional runs to meet the extra holiday demand.

Peak demand was on 29 and 30 December 2017, when 858,000 people travelled on long distancetrains.

The maximum passenger demand in the opposite direction was registered during 6-8 January 2018,when more than 1.1 million passengers travelled home.

Daily, double-decker and high-speed trains were in high demand from passengers.

About 590,000 passengers travelled on day trains, an increase of 27.5% compared to the level of theprevious year, while about 139,600 passengers used trains with double-decker carriages, 22.3% morethan during the previous New Year holiday period. High-speed trains transported about 355,000passengers, twice as many as during the same period last year.

The most popular route among passengers during the New Year and Christmas holidays was Moscow -St. Petersburg, with 368,200 passengers travelling between Russia’s two capitals, 18.8% more thanlast year.

Due to the high demand, Russian Railways also increased the number of Sapsan runs. In total, high-speed Sapsan trains carried 182,000 passengers, an increase of 10.2% on the previous year.

During the New Year period, the Sapsans experienced peak demand on 1 January 2018, when 17,200people were transported.

Also traditionally popular among passengers are the international high-speed Allegro services whichrun between St. Petersburg - Helsinki.

During the Christmas and New Year holidays from 23 December 2017 to 8 January 2018, Allegrotrains carried 24,400 passengers, 1.8% more than in the same period last year. To meet theincreased demand, the Company laid on four extra runs of Allegro trains with a double formation, thatis twice the usual number of carriages. Utilisation rates reached 80%.

During the New Year holidays, the RZD Holding created a festive atmosphere for its train passengers,by congratulating passengers on all PA systems, offering dishes from the festive menu in the diningcars and bistros and handing out sweets to children.
