Loading on the network of Russian Railways increased by 3.2% in 2017

According to the latest figures, the total loading volume on the network owned by Russian Railways
amounted to 1.2613 billion tons in 2017, 3.2% more than in the previous year.
The railways shipped the following categories of freight. The figures in brackets show the percentage
change compared to 2016.

  • coal – 358.5 million tons (+9.1%);
  • coke – 11.2 million tons (-4.7%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 235.5 million tons (-0.2%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 110.5 million tons (+0.9%);
  • ferrous metals – 73 million tons (+2.8%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 15.7 million tons (+4.8%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 57.1 million tons (+6.8%);
  • cement – 26.8 million tons (+0.6%);
  • timber – 43.3 million tons (+2.5%);
  • grain – 22.1 million tons (+16.4%);
  • construction materials – 132.9 million tons (-5.7%);
  • non-ferrous ores and sulphur feedstock – 20.2 million tons (-4.1%);
  • chemicals and soda – 26.1 million tons (+1.7%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 36.5 million tons (+4.3%).

Freight turnover in 2017 amounted to 2,491.4 billion tariff ton-kilometres, an increase of 6.4%. Freight turnover including empty wagon runs was 3,176.2 billion ton-km, 6% more than the level in
2016.
According to the latest figures, loading on the network of Russian Railways in December 2017 amounted to 110.2 million tons, up 4.8% on the same month in the previous year.
Freight turnover in December 2017 increased by 5% compared to December 2016 and amounted to 219 billion tariff ton-km. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs increased by 4.4% compared to the same month in 2016 and amounted to 278.8 billion ton-km.
