Transportation of containerised freight on Russian Railways’ network in 10 months already exceeds 2016 level

In January-October 2017, the transportation of loaded large-tonnage containers on the network owned by Russian Railways increased by 23.9% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 2,163,600 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).

At the same time, transit shipments increased by 70.5% to 280,000 TEUs, exports by 16.8% to 687,000 TEUs, imports by 49.1% to 442,300 TEUs.

In domestic traffic, 753,950 TEUs were transported, an increase of 8.1%.

The greatest increases on all types of routes were in the transportation of the following categories. The figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January-October 2016.

  • chemicals and soda – 369,800 TEUs (+13.2%);
  • paper – 240,000 TEUs (+6.4%);
  • timber – 222,400 TEUs (+28.5%);
  • mass consumption manufactured goods – 211,300 TEUs (+50.4%);
  • fabricated metal products – 192,100 TEUs (+48.8%);
  • machines, machine tools, engines – 144,500 TEUs (+46%);
  • automobiles – 147,900 TEUs (+61.3%);
  • non-ferrous metals – 92,200 TEUs (+7.6%);
  • ferrous metals – 86,400 TEUs (+27.2%);
  • construction materials – 74,100 TEUs (+3.2%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 45,500 TEUs (+47.1%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 19,800 TEUs (+11.8%);
  • agricultural machinery – 9,600 TEUs (increase of 2.8 times).

In 2016, 2,134,700 loaded TEUs were transported along all types of routes on the network of Russian Railways, an increase of 11% compared to 2015.
