The President of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov has held a working meeting with the Chairman of CJSC Azerbaijan Railways Javid Gurbanov.

The two men discussed the development of the North - South International Transport Corridor (ITC), including the route's freight base and the construction project for the rail stretch between Astara in Azerbaijan and Rasht in Iran.

Oleg Belozerov noted that the development of the North - South ITC is being actively promoted and that Russian Railways is ready to improve the tariff policy on this route in order to establish competitive transport conditions and, in particular, to consider the possibility of transporting freight at through rates.

In September 2016, the first test took place of shipping containers along the North - South corridor from India to Russia via Iran and Azerbaijan using multimodal transport. It is planned to organise container transportation along this same route on a regular basis.

In addition, Oleg Belozerov and Javid Gurbanov discussed joint work in direct freight and passenger traffic between Russia and Azerbaijan and in particular raised the question of possible further joint measures to improve the attractiveness of passenger traffic between the two countries.
