RZD Holding delivers mixed freight consignments from China to Yekaterinburg at Sverdlovsk Railways
JSC RZD Logistics, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, has cooperated with the company Far East Land Bridge (FELB) to deliver mixed freight consignments from China to Yekaterinburg.
Since the launch of this service on the Suzhou - Yekaterinburg route in February 2016, 30 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) have been transported. A TEU is a standard capacity measurement unit which is equivalent to the useful volume of a standard 20-foot container.
Loading takes place at FELB's warehouse in Suzhou in China, while unloading is carried out at a temporary warehouse at Yekaterinburg Tovarny [Freight] Station. Containers with small consignments of mixed freight arrive from China every week with express trains.
The main advantages of this new service are the high delivery speeds, which are three times faster than sea transportation, and its competitive cost, which on average is three times lower than that of air transport. Among its other advantages are fixed container train departure dates and guaranteed transit time. In addition, the service allows shippers to dispatch freight whose volumes do not justify booking a whole container.
Shipping consignments via the border checkpoint Zabaykalsk - Manzhouli has reduced the delivery time by 2 - 3 times compared with the current routes via Russia's Far Eastern ports with further transshipment on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
By the end of 2016, JSC RZD Logistics expects to transport more than 2,000 tons of freight from Suzhou to Yekaterinburg.
In the future, the Company plans to transport mixed freight consignments from Dongguan, a large industrial centre in Guangdong in southern China, to Moscow and Yekaterinburg.
