Russian Railways spent more than 3.2 billion roubles on environmental protection in 2015

In 2015, Russian Railways implemented a comprehensive programme of measures to achieve the target parameters laid down in the Company's Environmental Strategy. The parameters are based on energy efficiency, the introduction of environmentally-friendly technologies, renewable and alternative energy sources and integrated solutions for handling waste as part of the production process.

The Company reduced emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere by 49,300 tons, commissioned 7 environmental protection facilities and purchased 51 units of test equipment for 20 laboratories, as well as 5 car-mounted mobile environmental laboratories and one wagon-mounted ecological laboratory.

Within the framework of a joint project between Russian Railways and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) on the safe management and disposal of waste from persistent organic pollutants in Yaroslavl, a plant was commissioned to handle the thermal destruction of waste hazard classes I-V with a capacity of 4,500 tons per annum and the use of combined electricity and heat generation.

The branches of Russian Railways used and processed 45% of their production and consumption waste in the company's divisions in 2015.

The Company's subsidiaries also carried out significant work in 2015 to reduce the consumption of paper, cutting it by 788,000 packs, or about 2,000 tons, which is equivalent to 29% of the level of consumption in 2014.

Russian Railways also carries out planned measures to eliminate objects with accumulated environmental damage, which, among other things, is related to the historical character of rail transport prior to the creation of Russian Railways. In 2015, the Company eliminated 98 such objects.

During 2015, Russian Railways received a number of national and international awards for its work on environmental protection. The Russian Quality Organisation recognised 7 environmental laboratories as the "Best Test Laboratories in Russia 2015".

In order to develop common approaches in the field of environmental management and exchange experience in the implementation of innovative projects at the Company, an International Centre for Environmental Safety in Rail Transport has been opened. Railway companies from Armenia, Estonia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are taking part in the Centre's work. Cooperation is being arranged with the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS member states to develop model legislation and other documents on natural resources and the environment.

Thanks to the implementation of its Environmental Strategy, since 2007 Russian Railways has reduced emissions of pollutants by 50.5%, greenhouse gas emissions from the operation of railway transport by 16.8% and the discharge of contaminated wastewater into bodies of water by 52%.

Among the long-term objectives of the Company's environmental activities is a planned package of measures for 2016, including the inventory and accounting of sources of emission and the amounts of greenhouse gases, organising licensing activities in waste management, decommissioning objects with accumulated environmental damage, searching for new areas of resource conservation and increasing the environmental awareness and culture of each employee at the Company.
