President of Russian Railways sums up operational results in 2015

RU EN

The Board of Russian Railways held its final meeting of the year at the Company's headquarters in Moscow on 16 December 2015. It was attended by representatives from the authorities, public and scientific organisations and the Company's business partners.

In his report, the President of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov summed up the Company's preliminary production results in 2015.

According to Belozerov, loading volumes will decrease by about an estimated 1% in 2015 compared to the previous year, but the share of Russia's freight traffic shipped by rail exceeded 45%, an increase of 6% over the past 12 years.

More than 1 billion passengers have travelled on suburban and long-distance routes. Multimodal transport and new high-speed trains with convenient timetables enjoyed particularly strong demand this year.

"The links between Moscow and St. Petersburg, Bryansk, Yaroslavl, Belgorod, Smolensk, Kursk, Voronezh and Nizhny Novgorod – in other words, the routes on which we have offered a new level of services – have seen an increase in passenger traffic. On some routes, passenger numbers are up by over 1.5 times," said Oleg Belozerov.

According to Belozerov, in many respects this was the result of using double-decker trains and the Strizh luxury trains, as well as new transport products under the "Daily Express" programme.

Suburban passenger turnover amounted to almost 31 billion passenger-kilometres.

"The Company has for the first time come close to breaking even financially on suburban passenger transport. I would like to thank the government, the leadership at the Ministry of Transport and other relevant ministries for taking decisions which allowed us to achieve such a result, as well as the regional governors for their productive dialogue and support," said Oleg Belozerov.

As part of the investment programme, which amounted to nearly 383 billion roubles in 2015, Russian Railways is continuing to implement the modernisation projects in Eastern Russia to reconstruct the Mezhdurechensk - Taishet stretch, develop the Moscow transport hub and the approaches to the ports of the Azov-Black Sea basin and construct the Zhuravka - Millerovo line.

In 2015, the Company also renovated more than 2,800 kilometres of railway lines and purchased 502 locomotive units and 230 motorised multiple units.

In addition, Oleg Belozerov highlighted the role of the Russian Railways Holding in Russia's social and economic development.

"In the 12 years of the Company's work, the burden on the economy has been reduced almost two-fold. We accounted for 1.6% of Russia's GDP, down from nearly 3% in 2004. We have created a reliable source for the state budget by our tax payments, which in 2015 amounted to 281 billion roubles. The Holding employs more than 1 million people, which is more than 1% of all the workers in the country," said the President of Russian Railways.
