Russian Railways, Samsung Electronics and Government of Kaluga region discuss cooperation prospects
Salman Babayev, Vice-President of Russian Railways, has held a working meeting with Sanjin Park, President of Samsung Electronics, and Alexei Laptev, First Deputy Governor of Kaluga Region. The meeting took place in Moscow on 3 December 2015.
The meeting was dedicated to the prospects for cooperation in organising transportation across Eurasia using the Trans-Siberian Railway.
In particular, the parties agreed to study jointly issues related to the increase in rail freight from the Chinese port of Dalian along the Trans-Manchurian Main Line to Zabaikalsk and from there by the Trans-Siberian Railway. The parties also intend to enhance the effectiveness of this route to attract import and export flows that used to be delivered by sea.
Samsung representatives said that the company intends to exploit this route to the full for transporting goods from the Asia-Pacific region to Russia and Europe. With Samsung's participation, the potential volume of traffic could reach 28,000 containers per year.
A working group will be set up to study the project in more detail. Representatives from Russian Railways, Samsung Electronics and the executive authorities of Kaluga region will determine the possible volumes of freight which Samsung could dispatch and consider additional investment with Samsung's participation in the development of logistics infrastructure, including the possible establishment of a Samsung distribution centre in the Kaluga region.
