Oleg Belozerov elected Chairman of International Union of Railways
Oleg Belozerov, President of Russian Railways, was elected Chairman of the International Union of Railways (UIC) for 2016 at the organisation's 87th General Assembly, which took place in Paris on 1 December 2015.
As the newly elected chairman, Oleg Belozerov chaired a meeting of the UIC's General Assembly. Speaking to UIC representatives, the President of Russian Railways thanked them "for the high trust placed in me by electing me to the post of Chairman at one of the most respected international organisations in the world."
"I am convinced that the loyalty to traditions and principles that have always guided the UIC will maintain the Union's leading position on the international transport services market, promote large-scale joint projects and develop inter-regional cooperation, as well as help in the constant search for new approaches to improve the competitiveness of rail transport," said Oleg Belozerov.
Belozerov also said that he "will make every effort to promote the UIC as an authoritative association that provides its members with the conditions they need for efficient cooperation" and assured the UIC that it would continue to work actively in various directions, above all, with regard to transportation security, the development of international transport corridors and quality management systems.
Assembly members also discussed issues related to the development of railway standards and reviewed the final version of a global vision for the development of railway transport, as well as the UIC's workplan for 2016.
