Russian Railways and leadership of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug agree to jointly finalise model of Northern Latitudinal Route
A working meeting between Oleg Belozerov, President of Russian Railways, and Dmitry Kobylkin, Governor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug was held in Moscow on 18 November 2015.
Under discussion at the meeting was cooperation between Russian Railways and the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, a region in Russia's Arctic latitudes. In particular, the two parties discussed cooperation on the construction of the Northern Latitudinal Route and the implementation of infrastructure projects in Yamal as a whole.
"We discussed a joint project to develop the Northern Latitudinal Route. I would like to assure you that Russian Railways will make every effort to try to base this project on the best financial parameters. I think that we will find a solution. The Company needs a new freight base and, overall, development prospects for the rail network. We will therefore discuss jointly the technical details and make efforts to implement this project," said Oleg Belozerov.
Dmitry Kobylkin noted in turn that Russian Railways is a strategic partner of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug without which the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects in the Russian Arctic would be simply impossible.
"Russian Railways is the standard bearer in implementing the Northern Latitudinal Route construction project. All the freight base, tariffs and traffic management should already be determined when the Route's construction commences. Synchronising our actions is therefore very important," said Dmitry Kobylkin. "We discussed procedures for cooperation between the government of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Russian Railways. There are some bottlenecks which must be overcome by synchronising our steps. Today, everyone absolutely understands that building the Route is necessary. I hope our meeting will contribute to speeding up the solution of the practical construction problems," said Yamal's governor.
