RU EN

By implementing its Environmental Strategy, since 2007 Russian Railways has reduced the specific consumption for traction by 7.2% and CO2 emissions by 9.2%. According to the International Energy Agency and the International Union of Railways, this is the best performance among the world's leading railway companies.

Valentin Gapanovich, Senior Vice President of Russian Railways, announced these figures in his address during a video conference dedicated to the implementation of environmental requirements for managing waste from production and consumption.

Also taking part in the conference were representatives from Russia's State Duma, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the two supervisory agencies Rosprirodnadzor and Rospotrebnadzor, subjects of the Russian Federation and companies in the rail sector.

Russian Railways is clearly pursuing a path of environmentally-oriented development where the core values are respect for nature and the development of an environmental culture," said Valentine Gapanovich.

According to Gapanovich, the Company is focusing on an integrated approach in addressing environmental objectives. All newly planned production facilities will have only a minimal affect on the functioning of natural systems and will be implemented only on the basis of an analysis and the management of environmental risks. The design and operation of hazardous industrial facilities is carried out in strict accordance with international law and Russian legislation.

In addition, Russian Railways is gradually eliminating pollution associated with rail transport. The Company has worked systematic to identify, catalogue and rank those rail production facilities which produce pollutants and in the last 5 years has eliminated 208 of these sources. Another 92 facilities are scheduled for elimination by the end of 2015.

To ensure real-time monitoring of and participation in the development of regulations on environmental protection and ecological safety, as well as effective and timely management decisions, Russian Railways has also taken the initiative to establish an International Centre for Environmental Safety in railway transport. Railway companies from Estonia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan have joined the Centre.
