President of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov urges CIS railway administrations to focus on resources and the environment
Oleg Belozerov, President of Russian Railways, noted that in difficult economic conditions, conserving resources was becoming one of the most effective anti-crisis measures and a real source of savings.
Belozerov was speaking at the 63rd session of the Railway Transport Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which opened in Tashkent on 4 November 2015.
"Resource conservation makes a significant contribution to innovative development in rail transport, above all, to the creation of a new generation of technical equipment and the introduction of modern technologies that improve the energy efficiency of production processes," said Oleg Belozerov.
According to Belozerov, work on the development of new technology and the introduction of advanced technologies is actively underway in Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other countries. Existing repair enterprises are being modernised, new production of modern rolling stock and other railway equipment is being set up, high-performance jobs are being created and ultimately resource conservation and efficiency are being increased.
According to the International Union of Railways, Russian Railways is now one of the world's leaders with regard to energy transport efficiency among railway companies and a leader in the specific consumption of fuel and energy resources for train traction, outpacing the United States and European countries.
The economic effect of energy saving at Russian Railways for the past year amounted to nearly 5 billion roubles. Over the past 10 years, the Company has reduced the energy intensity of its operations by almost 25%.
Although the railways are recognised as the most environmentally friendly mode of transport, the Council's member countries continue to implement programmes actively in order to reduce the harmful effects on the environment.
"Speaking in support of the expansion of international cooperation in the field of environmental security and combating climate change, I encourage railway companies to engage in concerted action and create common approaches to environmental management. I believe that our efforts should also be directed at the prevention of natural and man-made disasters," said Oleg Belozerov.
According to Belozerov, it is also necessary to exchange experience in implementing innovative projects, developing energy-efficient and resource-saving technologies and creating waste-free and environmentally friendly processes.
