Russian Railways reduces the negative impact on ecology due to environmental measures on annual basis

World Environment Day is now marked at all rail divisions across the Company. In 2014, Russian Railways spent 5 billion roubles on implementing environmental protection measures.

All 16 regional rail divisions have environmental protection departments, including environmental laboratories. Each department is tasked with ensuring environmental safety at the Company branches of its respective railway division. The laboratories' main tasks are to implement the Company's integrated environmental policy and ensure that the line enterprises at the branches comply with environmental standards and regulations.

A special role is played by the environmental laboratories, whose competence allows the line enterprises to take measures to increase the efficiency at environmentally protected facilities and the eliminate the environmental impact of accidents.

The measures the Company carries out every year to modernise its environmental components, the introduction of innovative products and technologies and the implementation of environmental investment projects led to the following reductions in the period from 2007 to 2014:

  • harmful emissions into the atmosphere from stationary sources - 47.7%;
  • discharge of wastewater into surface water - 34%;
  • water use - 60.6%;
  • the use and disposal of waste increased by 11.7%.

In 2014, the Company's environmental activities were praised by Russia's federal executive bodies and public organisations.
