Russian Railways and Transmashholding conclude agreement on delivery of escort carriages for freight and commercial trains

The President of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin and the Managing Director of CJSC Transmashholding Kirill Lipa have signed an agreement for the production and supply of escort carriages for the needs of special Russian Railways' rolling stock compositions. The escort carriages will be used in trains consisting of ballast hopper wagons, as well as for the transport of track switches and heavy-duty track machines.

The agreement was signed at the X International Railway Business Forum "Strategic Partnership 1520" now taking place in Sochi. The document is a framework agreement, and the volume and range of deliveries will be determined subsequently by the parties.

"This agreement is another element in the existing strategic cooperation between Russian Railways and Transmashholding. For Russian Railways, the document amounts to the acquisition of rolling stock which we need when conducting track work. On the other hand, the order provides work for the Tver Wagon Plant," said the President of Russian Railways after the agreement was signed.

Escort wagons for freight and commercial trains are manufactured at the Tver Wagon Plant, which is part of Transmashholding.

The first such rolling stock (model numbers 61-4483 and 61-4484) was presented to the public in 2011 at the EXPO-1520 international exhibition.

Russia's railways have commissioned the construction of 47 carriages for 2015. Between 2011 -2015, a total of 133 carriages have been built and proven themselves efficient in operational conditions.

These specialised escort carriages provides comfortable conditions for the railway crew to work and rest. Each carriage contains a passenger compartment, a shower with hot water heating system, a toilet, wardrobe, clothes dryer and a workshop. It also has a power supply from an on-board diesel generator, which allows the carriage to operate for 30 days at a time.

In addition, every carriage is equipped with air conditioning and an independent diesel boiler burner to enable it to function in different climatic conditions. The kitchen is equipped with an electric stove, microwave and refrigerator. The carriage also has a TV antenna. The escort cars are 8 metres shorter than normal passenger carriages, which are often converted to escort freight trains, but are lighter, more economical and more convenient to use.

Wagon 61-4484 is attached to freight or repair-restoration trains and houses the maintenance staff and the track machine drivers.

Wagon 61-4483 is designed to escort ballast hopper trains. It is equipped with a diesel compressor, which is used when the wagons are being unloaded automatically.

The cars are certified in accordance with the requirements of the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.
