Second railway bridge over Lena opens

The 45th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of the Baikal-Amur Main Line was marked on 7 July 2019.

The same day saw the official opening of traffic across the second railway bridge across the Lena river on the Lena-Vostochnaya – Рredlensky stretch. This 2.5 km section is now twin-track.

The green light to start traffic was given Oleg Belozerov, the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of OJSC Russian Railways, during a teleconference with the city of Ust-Kut. The ceremony was broadcast to the main square of Tynda.

The first freight train has already crossed the new bridge over the Lena.

The construction of the second bridge across the Lena began in June 2015 as part of the programme "Modernisation of the Railway Infrastructure of the Baikal-Amur and Trans-Siberian Main Lines."

In accordance with the project, the new bridge was built on the supports installed in 1975, which were reinforced to handle heavy trains. The structure, including approaches, is 417 m long and 25 m high and can accommodate the passage of 15 m ships. The metal bridge consists of four spans of different lengths, with a maximum span of 132 metres.

The cost of the construction and installation work came to over 600 million roubles.

The second bridge across the Lena river is one of the strategic objects in the modernisation programme of the Baikal-Amur Main Line. Along with the laying of second tracks, points and crossing and passing loops and the construction of a second Baikal tunnel, it will significantly improve the development of the Baikal-Amur Main Line’s through capacity and transportation capabilities.

The launch of the new bridge will increase the carrying capacity of the railway line on the Lena-East – Chudnichnyy stretch from 26.9 million to 34.5 million tons per annum.
