Feasibility study of high-speed Indian rail stretch should be completed by autumn 2019

Alexander Misharin, First Deputy Managing Director of OJSC Russian Railways, has spoken about the projects being implemented by Russian and Indian railway companies and the prospects for further cooperation.

Misharin was speaking during the Russia-India session at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum today.

The Russian Railways (RZD) Holding has now proceeded to the implementation of the third and final stage in the preparation of a feasibility study on the project to increase the speed of trains on the Nagpur-Secunderabad railway line under an agreement between Russian Railways and Indian Railways. It is planned to complete the study by September 2019. The stretch in question has a length of 575 km and a maximum design speed of 200 kph.

"We expect that the Indian side will decide on the conditions for the further implementation of the project and the participation of the RZD Holding in the very near future. A possible solution in this situation is to conclude an intergovernmental agreement on joint support for the project, which the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation has proposed to India," said Alexander Misharin.

Another promising area of cooperation is the work on the development of regular freight rail traffic along North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC). RZD Logistics has therefore signed a memorandum of understanding with the CONCOR corporation, the largest container operator on Indian Railways. At the moment, the parties are working on logistic schemes and tariff parameters of future freight traffic.

Russia and India continue to work actively to strengthen and expand mutually beneficial railway cooperation between the two countries. In particular, in March 2019, Russian Railways organised two educational tours at the Company’s facilities for 80 trainees from Indian Railways. It is planned to organise tours for two more groups of 100 Indian trainees in July 2019.
