Russian Railways Holding organises first transit container shipment from Europe to Japan via Russia

As part of the Trans-Siberian LandBridge

RZD Logistics, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, organised the successful transportation of the first transit container from Europe to Japan via the Russian Federation. The shipment was done as part of the Trans-Siberian LandBridge fast transit delivery service.

The test 40-foot container, whose load consisted of various prefabricated goods, was dispatched from Hamburg in northern Germany to the Japanese port of Yokohama for Nippon Express Co. Ltd., one of Japan’s largest shipping companies.

The container was dispatched via the border crossing at Malashekic in Poland and Brest in Belarus and then travelled across Belarus and Russia to Vladivostok, from where it was delivered to its final destination by sea. The delivery time was 22 days, with 10 days required to traverse Russia’s 1520 mm broad gauge track.

The container was equipped with temperature, humidity and vibration sensors so that the customer could be sure of shipment’s safety and quality on the Trans-Siberian Railway. In addition, detailed information on the location of the freight was provided to the client on a daily basis throughout the delivery.

The Trans-Siberian LandBridge is the main tool for the implementation of the agreement between Russian Railways, the Russian Ministry of Transport, Japan’s Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the Japanese Association of Trans-Siberian Intermodal Operators For the Organisation of Container Transport using rail transport between Japan - Russia - Europe.

The Trans-Siberian LandBridge is a new multimodal transit service for fast-track shipping in containers from Japan to Europe and the opposite direction via the ports of the Far East and the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The service significantly reduces the time of freight transportation in comparison with traditional sea routes or transit through China.
