RZD Holding to develop integrated development project with Cuban Railways and train more than 600 specialists

Russian Railways International LLC, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, and Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Cuba [Cuban Railways] have signed an additional agreement to their contract for the rehabilitation and modernisation of Cuba’s railway infrastructure.

Sergey Pavlov, the Managing Director of Russian Railways International LLC, and Eduardo Jesus Hernandes Becerra, the Managing Director of Ferrocarriles Nacionales, signed the document in Moscow on 29 October 2019.

The additional agreement envisages the development of a master plan for the development of Cuba’s rail network, projects on the Central Line (Central Station - Santiago de Cuba) and the Southern Line and the design of a unified transportation management control centre, as well as a maintenance depot for track cars and small-scale mechanisation facilities.

The agreement also provides for the training of 600 Cuban railway workers on higher and secondary special education programmes and the training of managers and specialists.

The additional agreement is worth EUR92 million and will be implemented over three years.

The contract for the restoration and modernisation of Cuba’s railway infrastructure was concluded on 3 October 2019 in Havana between Russian Railways International LLC and Ferrocarriles Nacionales Nacionales de Cuba.

The initial contract is worth EUR 1.88 billion euros and runs for 10 years. It is being financed through intergovernmental agreements.
