Loading volumes on the network owned by Russian Railways increased by 3.1% in March 2018

According to the latest figures, in March 2018 the freight loading volumes on the network owned by OJSC Russian Railways amounted to 112.4 million tons, 3.1% more than in the same month last year.

Freight turnover in March 2018 increased by 4.2% compared to the same month in the previous year and amounted to 224.2 billion tariff ton-kilometres. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs during the same month increased by 4.1% and amounted to 285.7 billion ton-km.

According to the latest figures, loading volumes from January to March 2018 amounted to 315.7 million tons, 3.5% more than during the same period last year.

The railways shipped the following categories of freight during January to March 2018. The figures in brackets show the percentage changed compared to the same period in 2017.

  • coal – 94.3 million tons (+ 3.6%);
  • coke – 2.7 million tons (-1.1%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 2 million tons (-1.7%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 2 million tons (+ 2.5%);
  • ferrous metals – 8 million tons (+ 10.8%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 5 million tons (-11.6%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 3 million tons (+ 6.5%);
  • cement – 5 million tons (-2.5%);
  • timber – 4 million tons (+ 5.4%);
    grain – 7.1 million tons (+ 42.1%);
  • construction materials – 7 million tons (+ 3%);
  • non-ferrous ores and sulphur feedstock – 8 million tons (-4.2%);
  • chemicals and soda – 6.8 million tons (+ 1.1%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 3 million tons (+ 6.6%).

Freight turnover since the beginning of 2018 amounted to 636.2 billion tariff ton-km, an increase of 4.6% on the same quarter in 2017. Freight turnover including empty wagon runs was 811.7 billion ton-km, up by 4.1%.
