RU EN

On 21 February 2018, the International Railway Business Forum "Strategic Partnership 1520: Central Europe" took up its work in the Austrian capital Vienna.

The Forum is being attended by Maxim Sokolov, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, Oleg Belozerov, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board at OJSC Russian Railways, Andreas Matte, Managing Director of Austrian Railways, and heads of railway administrations and transport companies.

Opening the Forum, Russia’s Minister of Transport stressed that at present it was especially important to determine the competitive advantages of the railways, which would enable them to make a leap forward in the coming years.

"The idea of continuing the 1520mm broad gauge railways line into the centre of Europe is not just a reasonable, but an objective necessity in this competitive struggle with other modes of transport. The solution of this task will contribute to the development of the entire Eurasian transport corridor, which for the most part passes through the territory of the Russian Federation," said Maxim Sokolov.

The Forum participants will consider mechanisms to increase the capacity of the East-West corridor, the prospects for reducing the cost of overland freight, the formation of through tariffs and ways to reduce customs barriers and improve the interoperability of the two systems using the of 1520 mm and 1435 mm railway gauges.
