Volume of repair and track work at Russian Railways up 17% in 2018

In 2018, OJSC Russian Railways carried out track and repair work of all types on about 6,700 kilometres of track across the railway network, 17% more than in the previous year, including 3,400 kilometres which the Company upgraded. Existing tracks were replaced by continuous rail on over 1,900 km of stretches and more than 2,900 switches laid.

To increase through capacity, automatic blocking systems, which regulate the intervals between trains, were fitted to 152.3 km of track, while another 54 km of double and multi-track sections were equipped with two-way automatic blocking systems, which make it possible to let trains through on all tracks in both directions, depending on the situation.

As part of the programme to update railway automation and telemechanics, the Company undertook a major overhaul of 465 km of automatic blocking systems and 580 points, which are part of the electrical interlocking system.

Russian Railways carried out the most extensive infrastructure renovation on the freight lines with heaviest traffic: Kuzbass - North-West (all types of repair carried out on over 1,800 km of track), Kuzbass - Center (over 760 km of track), Kuzbass - South (more than 1,800 km) and Kuzbass - Vostok (2,200 km).

Due to the implementation of repair and track work in 2018, the Company was able to increase the passenger train speeds on more than 700 km and freight train speeds on over 665 km of track.

The modernisation of the infrastructure resulted in increased passenger train speeds on sections totaling a length of 100 km, including on the lines between Moscow - St. Petersburg, Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow - Smolensk - Krasnoe, Moscow - Kursk – Belgorod and Moscow - Ryazhsk – Voronezh.
