Container transportation on the network owned by Russian Railways increased by 17.2% in January-August 2018

In August 2018, 395,500 Twenty Foot Equivalent (TEUs) containers were transported on the network owned and operated by Russian Railways, 17.2% more than in August 2017.

During January-August 2018, the volume of containers amounted to 2.84 million TEUs, an increase of 13.2% compared to the same period last year.

About 1.23 million TEUs were shipped on domestic routes over the eight months to the end of August 2018, up 4.4%, 326,000 TEUs were shipped along transit routes, an increase of 28.8%, 737,000 TEUs went for export, a rise of 18.6%, while imported containers amounted to 552,000 TEUs, an increase of 19.8%.

The transportation of loaded containers on all types of routes during January-August increased by 13.1% compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 1.91 million TEUs. About 27 million tons of freight were shipped, an increase of 11.4%.

The freight shipped during January-August 2018 included the following items. The figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January-August 2017.

  • chemicals and soda – 321,400 TEUs (+9.4%);
  • timber – 241,500 (+37.4%);
  • paper – 207,000 (+9%);
  • industrial goods – 176,300 (+8.8%);
  • metal goods – 169,200 (+13.5%);
  • cars – 139,000 (+26.5%);
  • machines, machine tools, engines – 137,500 (+21.4%);
  • ferrous metals – 79,500 (+14.9%);
  • non-ferrous metals – 72,000 (-2.2%);
  • construction materials – 66,000 (+12.6%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 29,300 (-16.2%).
