"The high-speed corridor will allow us to deliver high-yield freight from Asia-Pacific countries to Europe in just 3 days," says First Vice-President of Russian Railways Alexander Misharin

The first Vice-President of Russian Railways Alexander Misharin has taken part in the IV International Transport and Logistics Business Forum New Silk Way.

The Forum was held within the framework of the Astana Economic Forum in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on 15 June 2017.

In his speech during the panel discussion "Historical Competition between the Sea and Land in the East-West Direction: The New Silk Road," Misharin noted the importance of integrating the Eurasian Economic Union's transport and logistics projects and the New Silk Road.

"This not only lays the infrastructure basis for the development of transit freight from the Asia-Pacific region to Europe, but also, first and foremost, the foundations for the economic development of the Eurasian space. The railways will play the most important role in creating a unified transport system," stressed Alexander Misharin.

The First Vice President of Russian Railways also drew attention to the steady growth of container transport by rail along the East-West route which has been observed in recent years.

In 2016, more than 153,000 transit containers crossed the territory of Russia, with plans to double this figure in 2017.

Transit traffic is expected to 1 million containers by 2020.

According to expert forecasts, the trend of increasing trade between the countries of the Asia-Pacific region and the European Union will continue.

Alexander Misharin said that the rapid growth in Internet commerce has had a major impact on turnover, which was about 2 trillion dollars in 2016 and is expected to double by 2030.

In addition, the proportion of high-tech goods with high added value in the structure of turnover will increase since these products are sensitive to delivery times.

According to the First Vice-President, freight transportation on high-speed railways travelling at speeds of up to 300 kph will become a new business segment which will compete with other modes of transport and facilitate freight delivery from Asia to Europe in just three days.

Alexander Misharin named two projects among the promising integration projects that can meet the expectations of consignors and consumers.

Russian Railways is successfully implementing the project United Transport and Logistics Company jointly with the National Company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy and Belarusian Railways.

The Company is also creating a Moscow-Beijing high-speed railway transport corridor, which will be used both for passenger transportation and high-speed freight delivery.
