Russian Railways and VR Group note growth in freight and passenger traffic between Russia and Finland
The annual meeting devoted to the direct Russian-Finnish railway link was held in the Finnish capital Helsinki on 8-9 November 2016.
The Russian delegation was headed by the First Vice-President of Russian Railways Anatoly Krasnoshchek, and the Finnish group by the President of the VR Group (Finnish Railways) Rolf Jansson.
Anatoly Krasnoshchek said that "the development of good neighbourly relations pursued by the VR Group and Russian Railways has contributed to a high level of performance at both companies."
According to Krasnoshchek, implementing joint projects in the field of advanced logistics, intermodal transport and information technology has enabled Russian Railways and VR to offer their clients a world class transport service.
During January-October 2016, more than 378,000 passengers travelled on the Russian - Finnish direct railway service, 3.4% more than in the same period last year.
The participants in the meeting also noted a significant increase in freight transportation.
During January-October 2016, 12.1 million tons of freight were transported across the railway border crossings between Finland and Russia, 17% more than during the same period in 2015.
Container transportation is also undergoing dynamic development.
During January-October 2016, the volume of shipments amounted to 27,900 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEU), an increase of 29% compared to the same period in 2015.
Within the framework of the meeting, Russian Railways and VR also signed an agreement on the transportation of freight in private wagons from Finland to Russia using paperless technology and electronic transport documents.
As a result, the necessary regulatory base for freight transportation with electronic shipping documents between the two countries has now been completed.
Anatoly Krasnoshchek stressed that the cooperation between Russian Railways and the VR Group saw a positive development in freight and passenger transport, an expansion of the range of services provided to clients and interesting transport and logistics projects. This provides the best proof of the effective partnership between the two companies.
