Russian Railways introduces Olympic suburban train timetable on Black Sea coast


On 24 January 2014, Russian Railways introduced its full timetable for suburban commuter trains on the Black Sea coast for participants in and visitors to the Sochi-2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Russian Railways will meet the increased demand for passenger transport during the Olympic Games by employing 38 high-speed Lastochka trains and 8 ED4M deluxe trains. In accordance with the commuter train timetable, during the Sochi-2014 Olympic Games they will make 413 daily journeys. Russian Railways guarantees to transport about 7,000 passengers per hour.

In preparation for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014, a system of transport services was developed, according to which five main Olympic railway routes were identified.

Electric trains will be used on the following routes:

  • Sochi – Olympic Park;
  • Sochi – Krasnaya Polyana;
  • Adler – Sochi Airport;
  • Olympic Park – Krasnaya Polyana;
  • Adler – Krasnaya Polyana.

The distance between Sochi and the Olympic Park is 30.7 km, between the Olympic Park and Krasnaya Polyana 46.1 km, Sochi and Krasnaya Polyana 71.2 km, Sochi and Sochi Airport 26 km and between Adler and Sochi Airport 3 km.

The Olympic train timetable will be introduced gradually.

In the first stage from 1 November 2013 to 6 January 2014, the Lastochka trains operated at 30% of the full Olympic timetable. In the second stage, from 7 to 23 January 2014, this figure was increased to 50%

In the third stage from 24 January 2014 and for the entire period of the Sochi-2014 Games, the Lastochka trains will operate according to the full Olympic timetable.
