Russian Railways and VR Group Ltd discuss bilateral cooperation

On 3-4 December 2019, St. Petersburg hosted the annual meeting of Russian Railways and the VR Group Ltd (Finnish Railways) on direct rail services between Russia and Finland.

The Russian delegation was headed by Anatoly Krasnoshchek, the First Deputy Managing Director of Russian Railways, and Rolf Jansson Rolf Jansson, the President and CEO of VR Group in Finland.

The two sides discussed joint activities in the field of passenger and freight transport and summed up the results of the cooperation between Russia and Finland’s railways in 2019.

According to Anatoly Krasnoshchek, the cooperation between Russian and Finnish railways was a good example of strategic and equitable partnership which contributed to the excellent results of both companies.

The participants in the event noted that the number of rail passengers between Russia and Finland increased by 16% and amounted to 536,700 in the 10 months from January to October this year, including 469,200 passengers carried by Allegro trains between St. Petersburg and Helsinki, an increase of 15.6%, and 67,500 on the Lev Tolstoy branded trains which run between Moscow and Helsinki, an increase of 16.3%.

According to the participants in the meeting, these results were achieved by joint marketing actions, which increased the options for train travel compared to other modes of transport.

In order to develop freight traffic between Russia and Finland, it was decided to step up the work of the marketing and logistics units of Russian Railways and VR Group with a view to creating effective logistics products, taking into account best practice in this field.

The annual meeting also touched on the topic of information technology. Since June 2019, the scope of electronic freight transport technology for exports has been constantly expanded in cooperation with Russia’s Federal Customs Service and the Federal Tax Service. The technology means that all participants can conduct their export activities solely in electronic form, including the possibility of paperless confirmation of the exporters’ right to a 0% VAT rate.

In 2020, it was decided to continue the work on expanding the range this integrated electronic technology to cover all freight shipments dispatched from Finland to Russia.
