“BAM is a living organism that benefits the country’s economy,” - says Russian Deputy PM Maxim Akimov

Celebrations are being held in Tynda in Russia’s Amur region to mark the 45th anniversary when construction work started on the Baikal-Amur Main Line (BAM). About 1,200 guests from all over the country and neighbouring countries arrived for the celebrations.

In the morning, a symbolic meeting of relay trains from Irkutsk and Khabarovsk took place at Tynda station. They carried guests of honour and the line’s veteran construction workers to the “capital” of BAM for celebratory events, stopping en route at the most important stations, where rallies and concerts were held to mark BAM’s 45th anniversary.

A celebratory rally was held at Tynda’s station square. It was attended by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov, Russia’s Transport Minister Yevgeny Dietrich, the Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Igor Levitin, the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways Oleg Belozorov, the Governor of the Amur Region Vasily Orlov, the head of the Republic of Buryatia Alexey Tsydenov, the former Minister of Communications and the first President of Russian Railways Gennady Fadeyev, veteran construction workers of BAM, current workers on the line and Tynda residents.

Speaking to the audience, Igor Levitin recalled that there was a time when the need for BAM’s construction was under question.

“Today we see that the Trans-Siberian and BAM are no longer sufficient, so the right decision was made to continue with the line. I would like to congratulate you on the 45th anniversary since the beginning of the line’s construction. The work you did is worthy of the utmost respect,” said Igor Levitin.

Oleg Belozorov expressed his gratitude to the veterans and all those who live and work on BAM.

“We shall always honour and remember your achievements. I would like to say that BAM has a bright future. Important decisions have already been made that we need to develop further, build infrastructure – not only rail, but also social infrastructure,” said the head of the Russian Railways.

The events continued with a ceremonial meeting at Tynda’s Dramatic Theatre.

Maxim Akimov greeted the BAM railway and construction workers on behalf of the Russian Government.

“45 years ago, millions of cubic metres of rock, thousands of kilometres of permafrost, taiga, frost and impenetrable swamps set us a huge challenge when it was decided to implement an unprecedented transport project not only in the history of the country, but also of humanity,” said Maxim Akimov.

According to Akimov, thanks to the selfless work and engineering talent of the “bamovites,” through trains began running on the Baikal-Amur Main Line just 10 years later.

“BAM is a living organism that benefits the country’s economy, solves important national and economic problems and, most importantly, undergoes constant development. We have to increase the capacity of BAM and Trans-Siberian. In solving this problem, we will rely on the accumulated knowledge and the huge example of courage, talent, perseverance and willpower which you have shown,” said Maxim Akimov.

During the celebrations, the best BAM employees were presented with awards from the Ministry of Transport, Russian Railways, governors of the Amur and Irkutsk regions and heads of the Republic of Buryatia and Khabarovsk Territory.

Celebrations will be held all over Tynda. Planned are a sports festival at the BAM stadium and a procession of orchestras from the “Spasskaya Tower” international military music festival. At the end of the day, a gala concert for the residents of the city will be held on the Square of the 25th Anniversary of BAM.
