Moscow Central Ring celebrates second anniversary

The Moscow Central Ring (MCR) celebrates its second anniversary on 10 September 2018.

Since its launch, the MCR has transported more than 222 million passengers, provided Moscow districts with greater access to transport and created new and convenient routes.

In addition, the Lastochka fleet has been completely renewed, the time between trains has been reduced and new transfers to suburban trains and the underground opened.

By the end of 2018, new links between the MCR and the radial directions of the railways will be installed and from 2019 the Lastochka trains will run more often.

"The MCR is a vivid example of the efficient use of rail transport for intercity transportation. The Ring is being merged organically into Moscow’s transport system, creating new convenient routes for Muscovites and visitors to the capital. It is now impossible to imagine Moscow without the MCR. To make journeys more comfortable for passengers, we are planning reduce the train intervals during the rush hour to four minutes in 2019," said Dmitry Pegov, Director for Passenger Transportation at OJSC Russian Railways.

Since the Lastochka trains were launched, they have transported more than 222 million passengers on the MCR. From 1 January to 9 September, 2018, passenger numbers increased to 84.5 million, 19% more than in the same period in 2017.

During weekdays, passenger numbers exceed 400,000.

As a result, the MCR has exceeded the initial forecasts of experts. The new transportation system became an instant hit with Muscovites and visitors to the capital immediately on its launch and made many areas of Moscow more accessible thanks to alternative routes and reduced passenger travel time.

OJSC Russian Railways is continuing to develop MCR to make passengers’ journeys more accessible and comfortable. In May 2017, the train interval of traffic during the rush hour was reduced from 6 to 5 minutes and from 12 to 10 minutes at other times.

To improve the MCR’s throughput and carrying capacity, the Lastochka fleet has been completely renewed and now modern and comfortable carriages specially designed for use in an urban situation and which therefore offer more room due to a change in the seat layout, wide aisles, handrails, separate places for low-mobility passengers and bicycles and user-friendly multimedia navigation.

All electric trains are manufactured in Russia with predominantly domestic components used in their production and assembly.

Work is continuing on integrating the MCR with the radial railway lines and urban public transport. Since operations began on the MCR, new convenient connections to the radial directions of Moscow Railways have been installed:

  • An underground pedestrian crossing was built and commissioned in the Kazan direction, thus creating a convenient change between the stops at Freser and the MCR’s Andronovka;
  • a new Novokhokhlovskaya stop was opened in the Kursk direction, creating a new connection between the radial direction with the MCR station of the same name;
  • On the Savelovsky direction, Okruzhnaya, a new platform, was opened, creating a convenient interchange loop with the station of the same on the MCR.

By the end of 2018, it is planned to create convenient changes on the principle of "Dry Feet" with Paveletsky by constructing a new stop near Varshavskaya near the Verkhny Kotly, Riga by transferring Leningrad to Streshnevo and Gorkovsky by transferring Karacharovo to Nizhny Novgorod on the directions of Moscow Railways, to be followed by the Yaroslavl direction by transferring the Severyanin platform to Rostokino in 2019.
