Container transportation on the network owned by Russian Railways increased by almost 12% in January-May 2018

In May 2018, 351,800 Twenty-Foot Equivalent unit (TEUs) containers were transported on the network of Russian Railways, 9% more than in May 2017.

In January-May 2018, the volume of traffic amounted to 1.7 million TEUs, 11.9% more than during the same period last year.

Within Russia, the transport volume in the first five months amounted to 741,000 TEUs, an increase of 3.4%. Containers transiting across Russia increased to 181,000 TEUs, up 24.7%, while containers for export amounted to 459,700 TEUs, an increase of 17.5%, and for import to 271,200 TEUs, up 16.7%.

The transportation of loaded containers for all destinations in January-May increased by 13.2% compared to the same period of last year and amounted to 1.14 million TEUs and totalling about 16.2 million tons of freight, an increase of 10.9%.

The goods transported included the following. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January to May 2017.

  • chemicals and soda – 195,100 TEUs (+7.2%);
  • paper – 128,500 (+7.8%);
  • timber – 141,400 (+31.4%);
  • industrial goods – 95,960 (+9.1%);
  • metal products – 100,300 (+14.8%);
  • cars – 87,000 (+34.4%);
  • machines, machine tools, engines – 80,700 (+20.2%);
  • non-ferrous metals – 44,000 (-2%);
  • ferrous metals – 47,800 (+18.1%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 22,400 (-5.1%);
  • construction materials – 35,000 (+1.1%).
