Glavgosexpertiza approves Moscow-Kazan High-Speed Railway project in Moscow and Vladimir regions

The Glavgosexpertiza, the Main State Expert Review Board of the Russian Federation, has issued a positive conclusion regarding the design documentation for the third and fourth stages of the construction of the Moscow – Vladimir – Nizhny Novgorod – Cheboksary – Kazan High-Speed Railway.

These stages include a series of works on preparing the territory and constructing the railway line and associated construction objects on the section from Zheleznodorozhnaya station 23 km (Moscow region) to the Vladimir High-Speed ​​Railway station in Vladimir region.

The design of this section takes into account the need to combine the construction of the high-speed railway and new sections of the M-7 Volga automobile highway, which bypasses the towns of Balashikha and Noginsk.

Combining the projects will optimise costs and minimise the environmental impact.

The approved section of the high-speed ​​railway has a length of 172 km and three intermediate passenger stations: Noginsk-High-Speed ​​Railway, Orekhovo-Zuevo-High-Speed ​​Railway and Petushki-High-Speed ​​Railway.

The line will be equipped with advanced communication and locking systems, GSM-R/DMR communication modules, thermal imagers and surveillance cameras.

The KS-400 contact network will have a length of 471.8 km.

Along the section, 151 artificial structures were also designed, including 26 large and medium bridges, 10 overpasses and 8 overpasses.

The forecast volume of earthworks on the site will be about 32 million cubic metres. The volume of ballast material is more than 220,000 cubic metres.

The area of ​​permanent land allocation will be about 2,000 hectares.

Artificial structures were designed to enable the further passage of field roads and the migration of wild animals.

The estimated travel time between Moscow and Vladimir, including stops, will be 56 minutes.

By 2035, average passenger traffic between Moscow and Vladimir will be 50 pairs of trains per day and the estimated number of passengers carried will be about 20 million people.

The results of the design, which was done by a Russian-Chinese consortium of designers commissioned by JSC High-Speed ​​Railways, a subsidiary of Russian Railways, were submitted to Glavgosexpertiza of the Russian Federation on electronic information carriers. The information amounted to more than 200 gigabytes.

Russian Railways is continuing the implementation of the Moscow-Kazan high-speed highway project.

At the moment, a consortium of design companies in the structure of OAO Mosgiprotrans, OAO Nizhegorodmetroproekt and China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co. Ltd. are completing the design work.

The track design is projected to handle maximum train speeds of up to 400 kph.

Two main tracks with a total length of 384 km have been projected, with 100 km to be laid using the technology of the upper structure of the track for ballast and 284 km using the technology of ballastless construction.

Applying the ballastless design technology will maintain the stability of the track geometry at high train speeds, make for fast track laying, minimise maintenance costs and reduce the wear and tear on the rolling stock.

The length of the railway is 762 km. The operational speed of the trains is up to 360 kph

Travel time from Moscow to Kazan on the new line will be 3.5 hours, much shorter than the 14 hours the journey takes at the moment.

It is planned to build 16 stops.

The route will pass through the territory of 7 Russia regions: Moscow, Greater Moscow, Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod oblasts and the Republic of Chuvashia, the Republic of Mari El and the Republic of Tatarstan).

In 2017, technical solutions were adopted for all elements of the high-speed railway infrastructure for different speeds.

A public technological and price audit on the project documentation for the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod section was performed by Ernst & Young and resulted in a positive conclusion

Public hearings were conducted along all sections of the railway line and recognised as having been successfully held.
