Kaliningrad-Yuzhny railway station for the World Cup will be ready by end of 2017
Work on the complex reconstruction and modernisation of the Kaliningrad-Yuzhny
railway station will be completed by the end of 2017, according to participants of
an inter-agency meeting on the preparation of railway station complexes for the 2018
The meeting was held in Kaliningrad, with representatives from Russian Railways,
the government of the Kaliningrad region and city administration, the Autonomous Non-Commercial
Organisation Directorate Kaliningrad 2018 and other organisations in attendance.
"From the point of view of Russian Railways, the modernisation of the station infrastructure
is being carried out in a systemic manner. After reconstruction, the station will
meet all modern standards with regard to transport security and offer barrier-free
environment for passengers with low mobility and comfortable and convenient waiting
rooms," said Vitaly Votolevsky, the head of the Rail Station Directorate at Russian
Kaliningrad station will be equipped with an integrated security system, including
metal detectors, X-ray machines for baggage screening, and 209 new digital video cameras
throughout the inner and outer perimeter of the station complex. Security checks will
begin directly on the station forecourt.
Particular attention is being paid to creating a barrier-free environment for passengers
with low mobility. Direct access to the station is provided for low-mobility passengers
from the station forecourt. The station complex is equipped with special lifting mechanisms,
including those connecting the passenger platforms and tunnels.
After the work is completed on the first floor of the station, a special rest room
will be opened for less mobile passengers.
In addition, a new navigation and voice notification system will be installed,
including in English, as part of the preparation of the station complex for the 2018
FIFA World Cup.
In the long-distance ticket office, electronic queue terminals will be installed
to improve services to passengers and reduce their waiting time.
