69th meeting of Council for Rail Transport of the Commonwealth Member States opens in Moscow

The 69th session of the Council on Rail Transport of the Commonwealth Member States is currently taking place in Moscow.

The Council meeting is being attended by the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Yevgeny Dietrich and members of the organisation and heads of railway administrations of Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine, as well as associated Council members and heads of railway administrations of Georgia, Latvia and Finland and the heads of the railways in Lithuania, Estonia and Iran.

As the Chairman of the Council, the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, Oleg Belozerov noted that the meeting was timed to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the creation of Russian Railways.

Since its foundation, Russian Railways has assumed a firm and leading position among global transport companies and now manages the third-largest railway network in the world, handling an annual traffic volume of 1.2 billion tons of freight and 1.1 billion passengers.

Russian Railways has also significantly strengthened its position in international transport organisations, including the Organisation for Cooperation of Railways (OSJD), UNESCAP and several others.

The wide range of tasks facing the rail sector is discussed and resolved by business councils in inter-governmental associations, especially Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (BRICS) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

"However, we can say, without exaggeration, that for our main business, the importance of the Rail Transport Council of the countries who are members of the Commonwealth cannot be overestimated," said Oleg Belozerov.

Addressing the meeting participants, Yevgeny Dietrich, the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, noted that in the context of global economic integration processes, the role of organisations that form transport spaces to serve the needs of large economic zones and regions is extremely great.

"Rail transport plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable transport and economic relations of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Council achieves success thanks to a high level of coordination, which covers all the most important areas of work of our elaborate railway complex – from the application of common technical standards and our well-established system of coordinated tariff policy through a unified electronic base of electronic document flow to the train timetables. It is extremely important to maintain and develop the common technological and information space, which allows us to implement the most advanced technology and traffic management across the transport complex," said Yevgeny Dietrich.

During the Council’s meeting, it is planned to discuss a wide range of issues, including the results of the operational work of the combined railway network and the results of passenger traffic in international services for the nine months to the end of September 2018.

In addition, a number of regulatory documents will be finalised and adopted, including the train timeable and the plans for the formation of freight trains and for the formation of wagons with containers in international traffic for 2018/2019.
