Russian Railways and Chongqing ready to expand freight network from China to Europe

Oleg Belozerov, the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, and Tang Lianzhi, the Chairman of the People’s Government of Chongqing in the People’s Republic of China, have discussed cooperation in the rail sector.

During the meeting, Oleg Belozerov and Tang Lianzhi noted the steady growth of rail freight traffic between Russia and China. The volume of containerised transit freight shows especially rapid growth, recording an increase of 80% in 2017.

The head of Russian Railways stressed the Company’s interest in further increasing the transit volumes.

“We are working to further raise the efficiency of transit transport, including by removing bureaucratic barriers and introducing electronic technologies,” said Oleg Belozerov.

Among prospective projects, the two parties are ready to consider establishing a regular container train along the route Chongqing – Zabaikalsk – Russian cities, which will increase traffic and increase trade between China and Russia.

In addition, the RZD holding and Chinese partners will explore the possibility of creating a joint distribution centre in Russia for a more efficient processing of the increasing freight volumes, including electronic items.

According to the parties, improving the competitiveness of rail transport will also help improve the process of passing through customs procedures.
