Russian Railways and Jewish Autonomous Region sign cooperation agreement

The Russian Railways holding company and the government of Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Region (JAR) have signed an agreement on cooperation and interaction. The document was signed by Nikolai Maklygin, the head of Far Eastern Railways, a regional division of Russian Railways, and Alexander Levintal, the governor of the JAR. The signing took place in Birobidzhan, the administrative centre of the JAR, on 14 March 2018.

The agreement, which will be in effect until the end of 2020, determines the general directions of joint activities and is intended to facilitate the implementation of Russia’s state policy on rail transport, its efficient functioning in the JAR, and meeting to the full extent possible the region's needs in the transportation of goods and passengers.

Far Eastern Railways makes a significant contribution to the development of the Jewish Autonomous Region. In accordance with the 2018 investment programme of Russian Railways, it is planned to spend 4.8 billion roubles on the development of railway infrastructure and equipment in the JAR, with most of the money to be invested in the reconstruction of the Birobidzhan-Leninsk section.

Loading volumes at railway stations on Far Eastern Railways in the JAR last year amounted to 2.7 million tons, 51.4% more than in 2016. The freight largely consists of bulk commodities and liquids, timber and construction materials.

In 2017, tax payments to the regional and local budgets amounted to 867.4 million roubles, 29.4% more than in 2016.
