Russian Railways buys 660 new locomotives in 2014

As part of its investment programme, in 2014 Russian Railways spent 76.5 billion roubles on the acquisition of new locomotives. In total, the Company purchased 660 new locomotives, acquiring 411 electric locomotives and 249 diesel locomotives.

Russian Railways thus supplemented its existing fleet of traction rolling stock by the following train engines:

  • 39 units of the Granite 2ES10 DC electric freight locomotive with asynchronous traction drive,
  • 5 2ES5 Scythian AC electric freight locomotives with asynchronous traction drive,
  • 188 Ermak AC electric freight locomotives:
    • 2ES5K (18 units),
    • 3ES5K (167 units),
    • 4ES5K (3 units),
  • 107 Sinara 2ES6 DC electric freight locomotives,
  • 1 Donchak 3ES4K DC electric freight locomotive,
  • 17 2TE25A diesel freight locomotives with asynchronous traction drive Vityaz,
  • 1 2TE25AM diesel freight locomotive with asynchronous traction drive with MTU diesel,
  • 42 2TE116U diesel freight locomotives,
  • 11 3TE116U diesel freight locomotives,
  • 17 2TE116UD diesel freight locomotives with General Electric diesel engines.

The Company also purchased:

  • 12 EP20 Olympus electric dual-current passenger locomotives,
  • 54 EP2K DC electric passenger trains,
  • 5 EP1M AC electric passenger locomotives
  • 32 TEP70BS passenger diesel locomotives.

In addition, the Company's shunting fleet was supplemented by:

  • 77 TEM18DM diesel locomotives,
  • 15 TEM18V diesel locomotives with diesels manufactured by the Finnish company Wärtsilä,
  • 23 TEM7A diesel locomotives,
  • 1 TEM-TMKh diesel locomotive,
  • 13 TEM14 diesel locomotives with twin-diesel power plants,
  • 1 TEM9H diesel locomotive with a hybrid power plant,
  • 1 TEM19 diesel locomotive with a gas-fuelled reciprocating engine.

In 2013, Russian Railways purchased 804 locomotives at a total cost of 83.5 billion roubles.

The Company's fleet now consists of more than 20,000 locomotives.
